7 Reasons to Take Hydration Seriously

Next to air, water is the most important physiological need for the human body. You can only go a few days without water. Think about those days when you just don’t seem to drink enough water, how do you feel? If you’re wondering where the sleepiness, headaches and nausea come from late in your afternoon workday, it may be caused by dehydration. You’re driving your enzymatic system crazy not getting enough water back in the body! Here are a few reasons why you should start prioritizing your water consumption.

Battle your blood pressure – It’s amazing how much water we have in our body. When you’re fully hydrated, your blood is roughly ninety two percent water. Unfortunately, lack of water causes the blood to thicken up causing resistance to blood flow and elevated blood pressure.

Stop getting all stuffed up – Asthma and allergies are irritated by lack of hydration. When you’re dehydrated, your body restricts airways and the rate of histamine produced by your body increases. Drink more water and you’ll get more air.

Perform at your best – Did you know that even a three percent loss in normal hydration levels can lead to a ten percent loss in your fitness performance? Take the example of 5K run, say with normal hydration levels you can run a 5K in twenty-eight minutes, but dehydrated it’ll be closer to thirty-one. Ouch!

Get control of your weight – You’ve heard it before, often times we mistake hunger for thirst. Drinking water will not only keep you satiated and give your body’s cells what they need to operate, but researchers estimate that over the course of a year, if someone increased their water intake by 1.5 liters a day they would burn an extra 17,400 calories. Every bit counts.

Decrease that high cholesterol – Your body is quite smart and when it doesn’t get what it needs it goes searching. When you’re dehydrated, your body produces more cholesterol to prevent water loss in your cells. You can keep your arteries clean and clear by drinking up.

Improves flexibility – The best way to speed recovery from your workouts is to drink more water. All joints have cartilage padding to ensure you move fluidly throughout your day. When the body is dehydrated, cartilage is weakened and joint repair is slow. Since water makes up seventy five percent of your muscles and twenty two percent of your bones, you can save a lot of pain, discomfort and wake up less stiff by increasing water intake.

Over the wrinkles – Prioritizing water consumption decreases premature aging. Your skin is the largest organ in the human body therefore if your hydration levels are chronically low, your body will start to wrinkle.

Enough said. Drink up!
